Monograms have been used for centuries, from royal crests to personal logos. Traditionally they have been embroidered, painted, carved or etched in silver, in designs created by the artists.
Modern machine-embroidered monograms look to print typefaces for inspiration alongside vintage hand-designed monogram styles. Since the invention of printing, the choice of typefaces has expanded wildly. While the range of choice we have today is fantastic, it can also leave you feeling overwhelmed. We’d like to try to demystify font style options, so in this blog post we’ll explore the most popular monogram font styles that have stood the test of time and continue to be loved by designers and individuals alike.
1. Serif Fonts: Classic
Serif fonts are characterized by small lines or strokes attached to the ends of letters which give them a formal, traditional look. Serif fonts such as Schoolbook (on the Maine Boat Tote in the top image below), Bodoni and Times New Roman (as shown on the tortoiseshell comb in the second image below) are frequently used in monograms due to their readability and classic style. These fonts are gender- and age-neutral, working well for children as well as adults.
2. Script Fonts: Elegant and Flowing
Script fonts mimic the look of elegant handwriting, making them a go-to choice for monograms that need to convey feminine flourish or traditional elegance. With their flowing lines, script fonts such as Ballantine (as seen on the Maltby Basket in the top image below), Edwardian and Monterey (shown on the napkins in the image below) can work as they are, or by interlocking letters to create an even more traditional look.
3. Sans Serif Fonts: Modern
For those who prefer a modern or minimalistic look, sans serif fonts are an excellent choice for monograms. Sans serif fonts, such as Helvetica, Futura and Slim Block (shown on the bag below) lack the strokes on serif fonts and the curvy flourishes of script fonts but still manage to have loads of personality based on the letter height and shape.
4. Vintage-Inspired Fonts: Nostalgic Charm
If you’re looking for a more nostalgic or retro aesthetic, vintage-inspired fonts are perfect for monograms. Fonts such as Chancery (shown on the lavender sachets in the image below), Fishtails and Typewriter (shown on the Pimlico Duffle in the second image below) evoke a historical vibe and bring a hint of vintage cool to monogram designs. These fonts are particularly popular in monograms for older men and women, but also for anyone in to the granny core trend!
5. Art Deco Fonts: Geometric
The Art Deco style, popular in the 1920s and 1930s, is defined by its bold geometric patterns and sleek lines. Fonts like Copperplate (on the luggage tags in the top image below) and Niagara (on the Natural Linen Hemstitch Napkins in the second image) are perfect for monograms that want to convey this look. These fonts are both all-upper case fonts and each letter is approximately the same dimensions so they always look balanced.
6. Handwritten Fonts: Playful
For a more casual, personalized touch, handwritten fonts are increasingly popular in monograms. These fonts feel less formal and bring an air of creativity and spontaneity to designs. Fonts like Comics, Pacific North West and Six Pence (shown on the Faro Beach towel in the image below) are great for projects where personalisation (the writing out of names) rather than initials are important. Handwritten fonts work well for children's gifts and informal events.
Whether you’re designing for a child or an adult, a man or a woman, for an on-the-go bag or an interiors item, the right monogram font style can convey exactly what you want. From the traditional look of serif fonts to the clean lines of sans serif or the elegance of script fonts, there’s a monogram style for every person, occasion and aesthetic.
Each type of font brings its own character and personality to a monogram, so choosing the right one depends on the message and style you wish to convey. Keep these popular monogram font styles in mind to create a design that’s truly unique and timeless.
