I Do… Love Monogramming: A Monogrammer's Wedding Edit
We're coming to the end of peak wedding season and what fun we've had creating so many thoughtful, personal touches for the most personal of celebrations.
One of the highlights of the summer was my own daughter's wedding. And after being asked many times lately how much monogramming was involved, forgive me for oversharing how this monogram-obsessed mother approached the wedding day details.
Having been given firm instructions to control myself, choosing which elements of the wedding day to monogram took some careful thought and difficult decisions. These are the considerations I found useful — and they might be a guide for incorporating monogramming at any event or celebration, not just weddings:
Theme The guests of honour should set the theme and tone of the event, particularly with respect to colours, style and overall vibe. So whether the theme is relaxed and colourful, chic and neutral, romantic pastels, or traditional with rich tones, the monogramming can reflect those styles and colours.
Context The venue sets the context and creates opportunities for purposeful placement of monogrammed details.
Usefulness The best accents and accessories are beautifully made and purposeful, rather than gimmicky. You want to make sure they go home rather than in the bin at the end of the event.
Storytelling Family traditions and heirlooms can be incorporated into the monogramming… and indeed the best monogrammed pieces become heirlooms themselves.
The Fun Let's not forget that personalised details can simply be for fun, adding an element of surprise and personality to the event.
From the getting ready through to the farewells, these are the monogrammed details which got the seal of approval from the happy couple and made the day uniquely "them":
Getting Ready The party starts long before the guests arrive. Monogrammed details for the getting-ready phase, including dressing gowns, were such a fun way to kick off the wedding day.
On Arrival Personalised matchboxes started disappearing quickly into pockets and handbags from the moment the guests arrived.
The Ceremony Whether it's heat, rain or cold to defend against, some well-placed details help guests wait comfortably for the ceremony to begin. We placed pretty bamboo fans, which we'd laser-etched with the wedding date, on each chair and it was lovely to see them fluttering away as we arrived.
And don't forget the monogrammed handkerchiefs… they'll be needed.
The Wedding Breakfast The wedding breakfast table is obviously centre stage for monogramming. While monogrammed napkins and ribbons are popular options, we used monogrammed notepads tied up in bows as place settings and favours.
The After Party Of course the after party requires comfortable dancing shoes! Plimsolls embroidered with the wedding date and some wedding motifs are fun to change in to when the high heels get kicked off for dancing.
